Piercing Process FAQs

How much does it hurt?

I wish I could say what your piercing will feel like for you, but everyone feels pain differently across different parts of their bodies! Every piercing is performed quickly and smoothly, and I take extra steps where possible to ensure as little discomfort as possible.

Do you use a piercing gun?

Never. No reputable body piercer will use a piercing gun or any similar tool. We will only ever use single-use sterilised needles. You can read more about this on my About page, here.

What jewellery do you use?

Included in the price is basic (plain) internally threaded or threadless implant grade titanium jewellery. For most piercings other jewellery (titanium and gold) is available for an extra cost, which can be browsed and chosen on the day.

Can I have a ring straight away?

For daiths and septums, yes. For other piercings, no. Making a straight hole/channel through the body requires a straight piece of jewellery for the best chance of healing. Technically, a very large diameter ring could be used (larger diameter = less curvature) however the size of ring required is rarely to the clients liking due to its bulky appearance. Large rings in new piercings also pose other irritation factors as they're more likely to get caught, knocked, bumped, etc., and will likely require removing and changing to a straight piece of jewellery to continue healing.

Daiths and septums generally require rings due to their shape, and harder to access entry and exit points.

Can I bring my own jewellery?

Short answer: no.

I only use implant grade and sterile jewellery to ensure the safety of my clients and the health of their piercings. Anything brought from elsewhere will not be able to be quality verified or safely sterilised without causing cross contamination to my clean area. So, to keep everyone safe from cross contamination, a new sterile piece of implant grade quality body jewellery is required for each new piercing.

Do you use numbing cream / can I?

No and no, for a few reasons:

- Numbing products may cause allergic reactions or skin irritations, particularly to a fresh wound (your new piercing).

- They “vasoconstrict“ which means they starve the skin of blood which is detrimental to a new piercing because a healthy blood flow is needed to start the healing process.

- They can tighten and contort the skin, meaning any straight marking/piercing I make on that area may then be wonky when the numbing cream wears off and the skin relaxes.

Piercing discomfort can be unpleasant but is temporary, and I do my best to make it as comfortable as possible, always.

Can I be pierced whilst pregnant / breastfeeding?

Unfortunately not. Whilst infections are uncommon, they can happen, and would require medical treatment. Having non-essential cosmetic procedures performed during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding should be avoided to ensure health of mother and baby. For nipple piercings specifically you should wait 6 months after breastfeeding, this is because nipple tissue will need to heal/settle once again before being pierced.

Can I be pierced in an area I've had fillers / cosmetic surgery?

Fillers: You should wait 12 months after having any type of filler before getting a piercing in that area, then allow that piercing to heal before having filler in that area again. This is because filler can spread an infection more easily inward and throughout the affected area, so although infections are uncommon, they are possible, and the risk is much greater with filler.

Cosmetic surgery: You should wait at least a year after cosmetic surgery to have a piercing in that area. If you already have piercings and are looking at getting cosmetic surgery in that area, the piercings will need to be removed and all swelling will need to subside before wearing jewellery / re-piercing again.

Piercing Aftercare / Troubleshooting FAQs

How do I look after my new piercing?

I will talk through aftercare at your appointment but it can also be found written out here.

Why does my piercing have a bump?

Piercing lumps and bumps are often irritation lumps, rather than keloids. Irritation lumps cam be caused by any source of irritation e.g. knocking it, snagging it, sleeping on it, being too rough with it, touching it too much, not following correct aftercare, not drying it properly, incorrect jewellery, low quality jewellery, not downsizing at an appropriate time, cosmetics or chemicals getting on it, swimming, pressure being applied to it (clothing, headphones, hats, etc)...
The best way to get rid of a lump is to pinpoint the source of irritation, and prevent it from happening again.
Make sure to come back for a downsize if necessary, as your piercing may not heal otherwise.

If you suspect it is not an irritation lump but is instead a keloid, please get in touch

What is the difference between a keloid and an irritation lump?

Irritation lumps are temporary lumps caused by a source of irritation. These will go away when the source of irritation is removed and prevented from occurring again.

Keloids are permanent lumps as a result of your body sending too much collagen to an area of trauma. These will not go away on their own and will need medical intervention if you want it gone. These are less common than irritation lumps, but can happen.

I've run out of saline, what do I do?

You can buy more Stericlens or Neilmed sterile saline from me in-store, or online, just search on Google, eBay, Amazon, etc. If you'd rather not buy any more then simply rinse your piercing in the shower to help remove any build-up, and then dry and check the tightness of the jewellery as you normally would. NEVER make homemade salt solutions or use any other kind of cleaner / soap / antibacterial creams / oils / tea tree/ etc. Only sterile saline or clean, warm water.

What do I do if I get an infection / irritation / excessive swelling?

  •  Common signs of an infection are: redness, swelling, warm to touch, soreness, leaking a thick/creamy pus type fluid. If you suspect you have an infection you should contact your GP ASAP and have it treated with antibiotics like you would any other infection. Try to pinpoint where it may have come from, and try to prevent it from happening again. Changing bed sheets and preventing contact with animals is a good start.

  • If you have an irritation lump on or near your piercing, read the question / answer above.

  • If you have excessive swelling, a cold compress can help to relieve this, as can anti-inflammatories (e.g. ibuprofen) IF they are safe for you to take (always check with your GP if you're unsure.) If the jewellery begins to embed and these efforts don't provide any relief, please contact me so that we can insert a longer bar. If I am unavailable for some time (away from work, etc) then it may be safest to remove the jewellery and I will see you when I'm back.
